Raymond Lemstra (b. 1978) was born in Groningen, The Netherlands and graduated from the Academie Minerva, Groningen, before moving to Amsterdam the following year. He has progressed through various mediums within his artistic practice. Finding his roots in creating detailed, intricate drawings on paper, he then decided to pursue painting. He developed his painting whilst spending time in Somo, Spain and more recently in Seoul, South Korea. More recently, Lemstra’s work has taken the form of fictional portraits, created with simple, geometric shapes. The work’s use of bold colours and simplistic shapes is reminiscent of pre-colonial masks creates a contrast and gives the work a somewhat awkward taste. A clash of intent, simultaneously assuming simplicity and complexity, randomness and reason, flaws and perfection.
