Nathan Ritterpusch’s Siren paintings conceptually combine classic Hollywood portraits and Greek mythology. They are executed in oil paint on canvas and operate visually in a language of fluid photo realism and digital cubism.He explains his process to this series as follows: American celebrity photography of the 1930’s and 40’s is digitally collected, collaged and altered to arrive at a single image that becomes the source of the painting. Using the classic grid method, the image is transferred by hand to the canvas before being painted “wet into wet” in multiple layers to complete the painting.Ritterpusch has been painting in oils since the mid 1990’s when he was a student at the a Maryland Institute, College of Art in Baltimore.
