Timothy Curtis (b. 1982) is a self-taught American artist born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Curtis has gone from being a prison inmate, doing portraits of his fellow inmates, to an internationally acclaimed artist. His West Philly ‘tag’ was PIPE, given to him at age 9. Curtis began doing graffiti at a very young age, using faces as a tag and renaming himself Agua, the warning he heard Puerto Rican artists shout when they saw police approaching. Curtis’s work exists at the intersection of drawing and painting. A graffiti writer from a young age, in this spirit, the artist places an emphasis on the power and intuition of bold lines in order to convey feeling and movement.
