WOAW Gallery is delighted to return to Taipei Dangdai 2023, featuring 25 artworks from 12 acclaimed contemporary painters whose fresh and radical expressions of life form a unique document of our times. This exhibition will be showcased in three parts: Adventures through the new realm of the surreal – Charlie Roberts, Ryan Travis Christian, James Ulmer, and Jonathan Casella; Nature reborn – Tim Irani, Kurt Lightner, and Sean P. McGaughey; and Portraiture reinvented – Jun Oson, Kila Cheung, Heesoo Kim, Felix Treadwell, and Jon Burgerman.
Revealing the richness and dynamism of human consciousness in today's multi-faceted world, their unconventional visions interrogate and transcend traditional artistic genres, combining allegorical and phantasmagorical tales with long-established motifs and tropes in portraiture, landscape, and genre painting. These artists would not usually be found in a room together, and the result is a showcase of startling perspectives that updates and enriches our understanding of contemporary art.
The first part of the exhibition, Adventures Through the New Realm of the Surreal, will feature the works of four artists – Charlie Roberts, Ryan Travis Christian, James Ulmer, and Jonathan Casella are united by a fearless imagination and boundless energy. Their art embodies the duality of the real and surreal, breaking through all conventions and allusions to shared heritage, education and context.
Nature reborn, the second part of the exhibition, will showcase the works of three American artists – Tim Irani, Kurt Lightner, and Sean P. McGaughey. Despite hailing from the same country, these artists bring unique perspectives and artistic visions to the table. Their works transcend the boundaries of traditional landscape painting and offer a multilayered view of their relationship with their homeland.
The final part of the exhibition, Portraiture reinvented, will feature the works of five artists – Jun Oson, Kila Cheung, Heesoo Kim, Felix Treadwell, and Jon Burgerman. These artists have boldly reinvented portraiture by discarding traditional methods and introducing new and contradictory visual languages. Their works oscillate between nihilism, rebellion, empathy, and hope, adding new emotional dimensions to the established canon of art.
